Greetings and salutations, folks. My name is Lamorne, one third of the Welcome to Our Show podcast crew. I am coming to you from my COVID bunker. Right now, I'm a little under the weather, so I'm going to do a little bit of Q&A. A lot of you write questions, you send over voice notes, voicemails, emails with some of your questions, and obviously, I got some time to kill, so...
I'm going to answer a few of those questions, starting with Mallory. Okay, Mallory writes, Hi guys, I'm loving the podcast as I just recently started another rewatch of New Girl. It's one of my comfort shows because it feels like hanging with old friends. And since I usually listen to podcasts about history or education, this is a nice change of pace. So my question is this.
What was the impetus for making Winston want to be a cop? Obviously, this was before the BLM movement was popularized, but protests against police brutality were happening as the show was filming.
Being set in L.A., Winston would have joined one of the most corrupt police forces in the country. Although Winston's blackness as a cop is talked about on the show, it seems like a strange choice for his weird, prank-loving character. Did any writers or actors push back on this storyline or suggest ways to improve it? How did Lamorne feel about his character's development? If you could do it over again, would you change this storyline? And if so, what would you have done differently?
You guys won't get to those episodes for a while, but I hope to hear your responses. Thanks so much, Mallory. Well, wow. What a heavy, heavy question for a comedy. I'll just start by saying Winston's choice or Winston's character becoming a cop was my choice.
I do believe I pitched that idea a while ago. See, I'm an actor and one of the things that I've always wanted to do was be in Police Academy. I've always wanted to be in Police Academy and it's one of my favorite franchises. And, you know, being on a television show, a show like New Girl, you have some hijinks and you have some space for that type of humor. But
You know, my character didn't have a gun. So I thought, man, if I play a cop or a new girl, maybe I'll get into some hijinks. And we did every once in a while. There's me and Nassim Pedrad, you know, busting into a house, I believe, in that episode. And me and Sam Richardson's character, Dunstan, we got a chance to do some silliness. That was the impetus for making Winston want to be a cop. And as you all know, you know, with my character, we struggled with some storyline stuff, some occupational stuff.
And that actually became a thing. You know, what job will Winston have now? So kind of just stalled that and said, hey, he's a cop. So that's why. That's why my character became a police officer on the show. Now, you alluded to other episodes addressing my blackness as a cop. So that's exactly what happened, you know, when the incident in Ferguson happened. And I've talked about this before in interviews and CNN and podcasts. And so, yeah.
It's out there, but I'll answer again. When it happened for a while, I was kind of taken back by what was going on in the street. Now, obviously this is something that black folks we know about and we knew about it all the time. You know, the relationship with police and black folks in certain neighborhoods is a strained relationship to say the least. When I was watching TV and watching the news and seeing all the stuff that was going on, I reached out to a showrunner and said, you know, I don't want to wear this uniform anymore.
And reason being is I felt in that moment, like, Holy crap. Like, damn, my character is in this. And then also part of this comes from a tweet where I said, how does it feel to be a black cop on TV with a cat named Ferguson? And I was like, wow, that's, that kind of hit me a little bit, even though it was silly, it was just still something that made me want to re-examine things. So instead of, you know, doing that, um,
Doing the whole take off the uniform thing, I wrote an episode to address what it must be like to be a black police officer in that moment and to kind of address what it felt like to me being an actor playing this person. So, you know, we wanted to address that as a staff on New Girl, I guess.
Hopefully that answers that question. There's more. Oh, wait a minute. It says it feels like a strange choice for his weird prank loving character. I don't think so. Again, have you seen Police Academy? In Police Academy, the characters for sure are silly and weird and sweet and kind and dumb and whatever. And they're playing police officers. So I don't agree with that necessarily, but I don't think it's a strange choice at all.
Did any writers or actors push back on the storyline or suggest ways to improve it? To improve it would be to imply that it was weak. And I don't believe that either. So, yeah, I'm pushing back on you there, Mallory, on that one.
uh how did lamorne feel about his character's development i thought the characters developed the development was slow in the beginning i talk about that all the time i think we all agree it was a little slow it was hard it was you know developing a tv show and and having a character come in on the second episode you you're trying to create a show and create a character at the same time so it's a little difficult but i'm definitely happy how it turned out um
I'm the Giannis Antetokounmpo of New Girl. Everybody knows that. If you could do it over again, would you change this storyline? And if so, what would you have done differently? I don't think I would change it. I don't I don't think I would change. I haven't seen this episode in a while. Maybe there are some maybe maybe there'll be some beats in there that I might change in the episode that I wrote. Maybe. Who knows? Who knows? I can't say that I would for sure change it.
At the end of the day, I think we were failing to realize that this is a comedy. It's a sitcom. It's for silliness, literally no stakes, zero stakes whatsoever. The fans love the show because of that reason, because of the chemistry with the cast, the, the, the silliness that we get into the fun that the show presents. And it's a little bit relatable to certain folks. Um, if we, if we, you know, strike a nerve every once in a while, great. That's entertainment. So thank you. Thank you, Mallory for your question.

He's got four O's in so, so I'm not exaggerating when I say so happy about that podcast. My question is, Ferguson seems so relaxed and easygoing on the show, but how is he in real life? Is he some kind of diva? Was it difficult to get him to do what he had to do? Thank you so much.

I haven't got any reports that he's croaked, so I'm assuming he's still with us. He doesn't write me anymore as he is a cat and has paws. And the only time he's ever written to me was my name in blood when he scratched me once.
is he a diva honestly yeah he's a diva you know he sleeps all the time you know comes and goes when he pleases our whole day is is scheduled around is centered around his schedule um he's got all these handlers that's like feeding him all the time and petting him all the time it's kind of like jake johnson so yeah i think he's uh i think ferguson was kind of a diva um
Was it difficult to get him to do what he had to do? Yes, it was. He's a cat. He don't listen to nobody. Cats don't listen to shit. Okay. Not a dang old thing. So yeah, Patrick from Germany, Ferguson was a diva, but lovely though. Not going to lie to you. I definitely missed that little son of a. Again, Sarah, it's my voice. You guys, I have, uh, I caught it. I caught the black plague. Okay.
Number three, I'm a big fan of the show and the podcast. If New Girl was remade specifically for a streaming service instead of network television, what would you do differently? Would you have racier slash more adult jokes or storylines? A longer runtime with no commercial break restrictions? More multi-episode arcs where you could explore more serious themes? was remade specifically for a streaming service instead of network television, what would you do differently? I could tell you a lot, I think, you know, and I agree with some of these things. I think the jokes would be definitely more adult. I, I know I would show more, but I would definitely show some more of my butt. I'm really happy and proud of my butt and definitely show at least a little side, but a little side cheek for sure. Schmidt's character, when he takes his shirt off in the pilot,
Wouldn't stop there. He wouldn't stop there. Have you seen that show 365? Yeah. You know what I'm saying? That's what Schmidt be doing. So, yeah, I think we would go there. Are they going to be a little bit more racier for sure?
longer runtime no i don't think it'd be a longer runtime i think you lose some of the comedy when you extend it for that that that long um but who knows there are certain certain new girl episodes that were heavier where i think you could maybe potentially have like a 40 minute episode um because we did we definitely cut out so much stuff we cut out so much stuff that you could create an entirely new season of new girl with just the stuff that we cut out um so yeah uh
Let's see. What else? More multi-episode arcs where you could explore more serious things? I think so. Again, you know, earlier you talked about some Winston being a cop. I think we'd for sure explore that a little bit more. The arc would last longer than an episode of the struggle that he might be going through.
um, or might not be going through. Um, so for sure, I think we could definitely explore more themes. Okay. Another question comes from Paris. Paris asks, was there a favorite snack that we ate on the show? She mentions Jennifer Aniston on the set of friends ate the same salad pretty much every day. Uh, um, and for me, a lot of different snacks. I don't know. Uh, I put on some pounds when I was on that show. Um,
So, um, all of them, but no, my favorite, um, was it almond Snickers? Almond Snickers. That's that, that might be the greatest thing on earth. So I got to go ahead and say an almond Snickers. I almost always had one at some point throughout the day because I would go and buy them.
So I have my own little stash and every once in a while crafty would have them they would have the regular stickers in there but I can't do peanuts so much so My still cheating do the Snickers with peanuts my allergies are not that bad, but the almond Snickers though That's gotta be it. That's that's gotta be the one right there. So to answer your question Paris. Yes I'm not sure if you can hear my daughter screaming in the background. That's what she does Yes, so almond Snickers

I am an aspiring comedy writer and director. And one of the things that I absolutely love about the show is the actor's chemistry and character.
hearing about all of the improv that was happening on set and I just wanted to know as a director what could what can a director do to make actors feel comfortable and excited to improvise on set also Lamorne I just want to say that I'm sure you know this but Woke is an absolutely incredible show and story and I hope you find somewhere to continue telling it because I feel like I need to know what happens and
Also, I have a panic attack disorder, and I have to say that the bus scene in Prayers for Cubby is the most accurate on-screen panic attack I've ever seen. Thank you so much for making that and for making me feel seen. So, thank you. So how can directors... First of all, thank you for such a kind...
Compliment, yeah, about Woke. Yeah, I definitely hope Woke finds some legs somewhere else. Yeah, it was a great show. And that Perris or Cubby episode, that was intense. And thank you for saying that. I hit that on the head. I don't suffer from an anxiety disorder, but I can imagine that's pretty stressful stuff. Just even doing it was stressful, so I can imagine actually living through it.
So thank you for that. But the question you asked was, how can directors help actors on set? How do you help them make make them more comfortable, et cetera? Pitch them jokes. You know, I will say that much. That's definitely how we got our chemistry going. You know, we had directors and writers on set where they throw out ideas and that allows us to be fun and loose and play.
And also part of that has a lot to do with the casting process too, when you got to make sure people who are coming together genuinely get along and like each other and respect each other and are different in certain ways. So you can come up with different ideas at different points of view, even when you're playing. So I definitely think that a director who allows for improv on set and allows for kind of a loose environment is definitely one of my favorites, right?
One of my favorite types, obviously you got all kinds of directors, but ones who are encouraging play and silliness and allows you to go big and allows you to try things and experiment without any judgment or anything like that.
I could tell you my character was weird, man. Very, very weird. And my character wouldn't be as weird if I didn't have Jake Kasdan and other directors like Trent O'Donnell and, you know, everyone, everyone who ever, you know, took part in our show, uh, that allowed for us to be playful and allowed for us to be loose and free and make mistakes and do stupid stuff. So, yeah, I think any director who allows that, that, that freedom, uh,
We'll have a good time on set and the actors will definitely have a good time on set. Next question comes from Melanie from Germany. Melanie from Germany. She asks, which actor is the most like his character in real life and which one the least? You could also name all the main characters in between. Love Melanie from Germany. Most like the character, I would probably say Jake Johnson is most like, I'm going to say CeCe.
Hannah Simone is most like Cece. Um, she is, you know, obviously a very like supportive friend, but she's, you know, she's not like the former Cece, like the first Cece was all over the place. I'm not even going to get into it, but what Cece turned into a loving mother, uh, just a dope ass individual. Um,
That's who Cece is and that's who Hannah is. Most like each other. Cece's character isn't weird and strange in any type of way. You know what I mean? Like, odd. She's not odd. She has some odd tendencies for sure, but she's not odd. Like, I was going to say Jake is most like Nick, but...
you know, because of his, um, I don't know, his curmudgeonly like ways, you know, he don't shave much and I'm seeing all of him. All right, stop. But what I'm saying is, you know, that's a character that he's playing that's out there with weird quirks. Hannah, even though she's playing a character, she's very similar. I believe. Yeah. I think that will, uh,
Answer that question for you. And who's the least like their character? I'd probably say Max. Max is least like Schmidt. Schmidt is, I mean, what? Max is not that. Max is super calm, very, you know, reasonable, not anal about all the things that Schmidt's anal about. I would go ahead and give that to Max.

Remember television with commercials? Damn. New Girl is my forever favorite. This question is for all three of you, but maybe mostly Lamorne. We know that Winston was lovingly known as Prank Sinatra, but that Nick was the real master of Pranks in the Loft.
Did you ever play pranks on each other on set? From Lauren Hassani. Well, Lauren Hassani, let me stop you right there. No, Nick was not the real master of pranks in the loft. He was not. He was not. It was Winston. Or it was Nick. Who cares? But do we play any pranks on each other on set? I wouldn't say we play pranks on each other because we were all adults, but I do, I would say...
I would say that we did, you know, silly stuff. You know, we did bits all the time, like constant bits. I remember playing pranks with one of the writers, writer-producers on the show, Nina Pedrod. Nina Pedrod, yes. We used to play pranks on each other. She is the sister of Nassim Pedrod, who plays Ali on New Girl.
Yeah, so we would do, we would play the dumbest pranks on each other. We have this ongoing prank where we just like to tell each other thank you, but in the most elaborate ways. For example, I walk into my trailer, it's filled with balloons and a note that says thank you. I once called a meeting.
uh for the whole crew to go and meet on the bar set and when they got there including nina there was a sign that said hey nina thanks in fact for christmas i sent her a massive picture like a like a poster of of me saying nina thanks it just it doesn't stop it doesn't i tried to get i tried to go in there i tried to get real deep in this in this in this bit and
And, you know, we haven't done it in a while, but I do think that I will continue that somehow. I'm going to get, I don't know, I'm going to get my kid involved at some point. Maybe the cops. I don't know what I'm going to do. But no, the cast never really did that. We never really played those pranks on each other. I'm known for a bit or two, but that's about it.

Well, Amber, thank you for the kind words. I really do appreciate that. I do believe I speak for the entire cast when I say thank you. That wedding episode was a very special episode for us. That chicken dance, you know, I think about it when I go to weddings. I don't actually do it, but I think about doing it every once in a while if I want the attention to be on me. But I never actually end up doing it. In fact, at most weddings, I end up dipping out with a nice Irish goodbye.
Is that problematic to say? I don't know. It's called whatever. So yeah, I haven't done that at an actual wedding. I know that wasn't your question, but the answer to that is no, I'm not really colorblind. I'm not at all. I am not colorblind. Although sometimes I think it might be fun to say the words, I don't see color. Yeah.
Anyway, but no, I'm not. And so there goes the rest of that question. Were those really colorblind glasses that you used? I don't think they were, but knowing our props team, they probably were colorblind glasses that we used. I know I looked up a bunch of like,
colorblind people who can see color for the first time videos and they're wild. Do yourselves a favor. Google that. Google that. It is the excitement that you see in their faces when they see color for the first time. Wow. What was your favorite prank to do as Prank Sinatra? It would have to be the finale because it was such a long one. It was such a slow burn.
It would have to be the finale. You know, there's something, you know, silly about, you know, I'm the last character you see on New Girl. I'm the last, meaning last of the main characters. You know, you got Nick, Jess, Schmidt, Cece, Coach, Winston. You see my character the last because that was a replacement.
But also on the last face you see when our show ends, which I thought was, that was special. That was pretty cool. All, and it's a testament to the writers to end a series on a, on a prank. I mean, I didn't see that coming until obviously until I read it. So that was, that was incredible. That was, that was, that had to be my favorite prank to do because I didn't do anything. So yeah, there you have it.
