The Democratic National Convention kicks off later today in Chicago, and the party is putting an emphasis on reaching voters online. For the first time, viewers will be able to find vertical streams of the convention on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. NPR's Elena Moore reports. The Democratic National Convention Committee says the party's programming will be streamed on over a dozen platforms.

The goal, according to the committee, is to reach, quote, more Americans than ever before. But having vertical streams on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube for the first time has an added weight. It's a prime spot to reach younger voters who may not otherwise tune in. And that's a voting bloc that handily backed President Biden in 2020 and that Vice President Harris needs in her camp again.

Elena Moore, NPR News, Chicago. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stayed off the campaign trail on Sunday, but his surrogates took to the TV shows. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham was on Meet the Press, where he said if Trump turns away from personal attacks on Democrats and focuses on his plans for a new administration, Republicans will win in the fall. I would make it about policy a nightmare for Harris.

is to defend her policy choices. Every day we're not talking about her policy choices as vice president and what she would do as president is a good day for her and a bad day for us. More than 17,000 AT&T workers are on strike in the southeast. The Communications Workers of America Union is accusing the company of not bargaining in good faith.

Stephen Basaha of the Gulf States News and Reports. The strike involves technicians, customer service reps, and other workers stretching from Louisiana to North Carolina. Richard Honeycutt represents those workers at the union and says AT&T has not been serious about trying to get an agreement. If I had to use a word, I would almost say stall. Honeycutt says workers in the southeast are also paid less than in other states, including the Midwest.

but at the same time, we have a higher cost of living, but we're receiving lesser wages. The union has accused AT&T of sending negotiators without any decision-making authority. AT&T denies breaking any labor laws and points to agreements it's already made with the union in other parts of the country.

Officials in North Korea say the latest round of military drills between the U.S. and South Korea are practiced for an invasion of their country. The Ulchi Freedom Shield drills begin Monday morning local time and will run for 11 days. The U.S. says they're defensive in nature. The drills include computer simulations and field exercises.

One of Russia's most active volcanoes erupted on Sunday and spewed plumes of ash some three miles into the sky. The ash briefly triggered a code red warning for aircraft. The eruption began shortly after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Russian volcanologists are warning that another earthquake could also be on the way. You're listening to NPR News.

A cholera outbreak is underway in the North African nation of Sudan. Health officials there say they've confirmed 354 cases of the highly infectious disease, and more than 20 people have already died. Cholera can lead to severe dehydration and rapid death if it's not quickly treated.

Iowa officials say they've excavated a new mastodon skull and tusks estimated to be around 13,600 years old. As NPR's Joe Hernandez reports, authorities say it's the first well-preserved mastodon in state history. Iowa's Office of the State Archaeologist says a 12-day dig yielded several mastodon bones, primarily from the skull. The state will now analyze the bones to look for any evidence of human activity, such as cut marks.

American mastodons went extinct around 10,500 years ago and are members of the same order as modern-day elephants. They stood as high as 10 feet tall with twisty tusks, and their fossils have been discovered across North and Central America.

Iowa officials say the new mastodon was found along an eroding creek bank in Wayne County. The bones will undergo conservation and analysis at the University of Iowa before becoming part of a new exhibit at Iowa's Prairie Trails Museum.

Joe Hernandez, NPR News. With one month left in the WNBA regular basketball season, former Iowa standout Kaitlyn Clark has set a new record for assists by a rookie. She had 23 points and 9 assists Sunday as the Indianapolis Fever beat the Seattle Storm 92-75. She now has 232 assists, surpassing the previous record of 224. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
