Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. Hurricane Milton triggered 15 inches of rain and historic flooding, prompting more than 100 water rescues in Florida's Pasco County. The storm claimed at least eight lives there and left millions across the state without electric and internet services. From member station WUSF, Gabriella Paul joined one resident who had to wade through water to return home after evacuating.

Jamie Murphy is making the trek through thigh-high water to reach her driveway. I can't drive my car back here to unload my things, so I have to grab things I took when I evacuated. Kids are playing on bikes at the water's edge. Residents say a beach ball and a refrigerator floated down the street this morning. Murphy says it's a good idea to get some water.

Murphy says the Riverside neighborhood is used to flooding after a big storm, but it's rarely this much water this quickly. Four rivers in Pasco County are expected to hit major flood stage by next Tuesday. Shelters are remaining open for people evacuating river flooding. For NPR News, I'm Gabriella Paul in Elfers, Florida.

The annual inflation rate in September was the lowest it's been in nearly four years. But NPR's Scott Horsley reports that inflation is not coming down as fast as Federal Reserve policymakers would like. Rates will probably keep coming down, but maybe not as fast as we had expected. Yesterday we got the minutes from the most recent Fed meeting, and they show policymakers were kind of divided over that aggressive half-point rate cut we saw last month. A number of policymakers would have preferred to go with a smaller quarter-point cut, and

And the combination of today's report showing somewhat sticky inflation and last week's report showing stronger than expected job growth in September is likely to make the central bank even more cautious about cutting interest rates in the months to come. We still expect a rate cut, but probably a more modest quarter point cut in November. NPR's Scott Horsley reporting.

A judge in Manhattan has set a May 2025 trial date for the sex trafficking and racketeering trial of music mogul Sean Diddy Combs. NPR's Cindy Madden has more. The indictment against Sean Diddy Combs alleges he forced victims into sexual situations called freak-offs that he videotaped and would later silence victims through physical abuse, blackmail, and manipulation.

Prosecutors say they've seized hundreds of electronic devices from Combs' mansions that contain video evidence of this abuse. The defense is requesting certain pieces of video be suppressed as evidence. That includes a 2016 surveillance video of Combs attacking his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, that was leaked to CNN earlier this year. The judge is reviewing.

Combs was arrested on September 17th on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. He is pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being held without bail. Sydney Madden, NPR News. This is NPR.
