Emergency crews are still assessing the needs of Hurricane Milton survivors in Florida. The death toll has risen to at least eight since Milton came ashore in Sarasota County late Wednesday. NPR's Sergio Martinez Bertran reports on the recovery effort that's underway in Bonita Springs. Cleaning efforts post-Hurricane Milton are along the way across the state of Florida, including in Bonita Springs on the southwest coast.

Here, the streets are full of sand. It's pretty incredible to see. Mailboxes are buried under sand. It's pretty hard to differentiate where does the beach ends, where does the sidewalk starts, and what is the front yard of a home. The cleaning efforts here include pushing the sand to the sides to create a path for residents to access their homes. In this area, the storm surge reached up to 13 feet.

Sergio Martinez Beltran, NPR News, Bonita Springs, Florida. Former President Barack Obama has hit the campaign trail on behalf of Vice President Kamala Harris. Obama told a Pittsburgh audience that former President Trump takes credit for the economy that he inherited. The reason some people think, well, I don't know, I remember that economy when he first came in being pretty good. Yeah, it was pretty good because it was my economy. Yeah.

We had had 75 straight months of job growth that I handed over to him. Obama is expected to campaign for Harris and her running mate Tim Walz in states and counties that have already started early voting.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump addressed the Detroit Economic Club Thursday, promising tax cuts and a revival of the U.S. auto industry. As WDET's Alex McLennan reports, the business leaders provided a more formal setting than Trump's usual campaign rallies. Trump used his speech to announce that if elected, he would make interest rates on car loans fully deductible to promote buying. He also promised to lower the corporate tax rate by 6 percent,

and spent time in front of the Detroit audience attacking Kamala Harris and Detroit itself. Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she's your president. You're going to have a mess on your hands. Trump says he wants to renegotiate the trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, which can be reviewed in 2026. Vice President Harris has also talked about renegotiating that deal. For NPR News, I'm Alex McLennan in Detroit. Ethel Kennedy has died at the age of 96.

She was the widow of the late Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968. Former President Obama called Ethel Kennedy a dear friend with passion for justice. She died of complications from a stroke. This is NPR News.
