Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Giles Snyder.

Former President Donald Trump rallied supporters in Reno, Nevada last night. Early mail-in voting is underway in Nevada right now, so return your ballot today. Vote Republican at every level. Trump repeated many of the same claims about alleged crimes carried out by immigrants that he made earlier in the day in Aurora, Colorado. Aurora's Republican mayor says the claims are grossly exaggerated and have hurt the city's identity and sense of safety.

Later today, Trump is to attend a roundtable in Las Vegas focused on the economy and hold another rally in Coachella, California. His Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, is scheduled to travel to North Carolina today, which is still reeling from Hurricane Helene.

She's told to rally in Greenville tomorrow in Florida. Residents are returning to check on their homes after evacuating to get out of the way of Hurricane Milton. People in Florida still finding gas increasingly difficult to come by, with some drivers waiting hours in line, as NPR's Jacqueline Diaz reports.

Gas stations in Sarasota and Fort Myers are experiencing major fuel shortages. And in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area, almost 80% of gas stations had little to no fuel. That's according to the website GasBuddy, which tracks fuel availability. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has said the state is working to get more gas to hard-hit areas. But he's not sure if he's going to be able to get more gas to hard-hit areas.

But drivers on Friday were still waiting in lines miles long just to fill up their tank. Police in Pasco County said their department received numerous calls for fights at gas stations in the area. They urged drivers to remain patient and respectful. Jacqueline Diaz, NPR News, Sarasota.

The Israeli military has renewed orders for Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip to leave their homes and shelters. Israel has been pressing and offensive in the area to keep Hamas from regrouping. Most of the fighting has centered in and around Jabalia, where health officials say an Israeli strike on a home there killed at least 13 Palestinians.

Stocks rose this week as inflation continued to cool. NPR's Scott Horsley reports both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 Index hit new highs. All the major stock indexes gained ground during the week. The Labor Department reported that inflation slowed at both the wholesale and the retail level in September. Retail prices were up 2.4 percent from a year ago. That's the smallest annual increase in more than three and a half years.

Investors expect the Federal Reserve to keep cutting interest rates, but minutes from the most recent Fed meeting confirmed the central bank is not in a big hurry. While the Fed okayed an aggressive half-point rate cut in September, some policymakers said they would have preferred a more cautious quarter-point cut. For the week, both the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 index gained about 1.1 percent. The Dow jumped 1.2 percent. Scott Horsley, NPR News. And you're listening to NPR News.
