Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Four Israeli soldiers were killed in a drone attack carried out by the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah on an army training base. NPR's Jackie Northam reports the strike took place shortly after the Pentagon announced plans to send an advanced anti-missile system to Israel. It was against the

in an army base in a place called Binyamina in central Israel, about 40 miles from the Lebanon border. And it's one of the deadliest Hezbollah attacks in this past year. Israel's military said the drone hit the roof of a dining hall full of soldiers and that in fact there were two drones launched. One was shot down, but this one hit the base. That's NPR's Jackie Northam reporting from Tel Aviv.

The delivery of the sophisticated defense system could further escalate the conflict in the Middle East, despite widespread diplomatic efforts to avoid an all-out war.

China says it's wrapped up large-scale military drills surrounding Taiwan. NPR's Emily Fang reports the exercises simulated an invasion of the self-governing island. Taiwan's defense ministry said it tracked 17 Chinese military ships and 125 aircraft, the highest number ever on Monday, as China encircled Taiwan during the drill.

China said the drill's war retaliation for a National Day speech Taiwan's president gave last week in which he pushed back against China's territorial claims over Taiwan. China says it dispatched its air force, navy and marines all to practice real-life capabilities of blockading and striking Taiwan.

China said it successfully practiced all its objectives in just one day, but hinted it could mount another drill in the future in order to, quote, "...foil Taiwan in dependent separatist attempts."

Emily Fang, NPR News, Taipei, Taiwan. The presidential candidates are returning to the campaign trail this week. Both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will rally supporters in Pennsylvania today. NPR's Asma Khalid reports with the election just three weeks away, recent polling shows the race is extremely tight. Vice President Harris and former President Trump are both visiting Pennsylvania on Monday.

Harris has stops this week across the blue wall states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Democrats have traditionally relied on those states to win the White House. Harris's campaign says she's planning a series of events this week focused on black men, including an event with black entrepreneurs and a town hall with the radio host Charlamagne Tha God, whose show is popular with younger black audiences.

The Democratic Party has long relied on huge support among Black voters to win elections. But Democrats worry some voters may be drifting away from them. Asma Khalid, NPR News. On Wall Street, the Dow was up 68 points. This is NPR.
