Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. A dispute over the killing last year of a Sikh activist in Canada has led to a diplomatic tit-for-tat. Canada and India each expelled six diplomats today after the Canadian government said the Indian ambassador is a person of interest in the killing, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Canada is a country rooted in the rule of law, and the protection of our citizens is paramount.

Trudeau said today that Canadian investigators have what he called clear and compelling evidence that agents of the Indian government are engaged in activity that he says pose a threat to the public safety. India rejects the allegations as absurd.

The Lebanese Red Cross is blaming Israel for an airstrike today that killed 21 people. The attack comes a day after the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah carried out a deadly drone strike on a military base in Israel. NPR's Arisa Rezvit has more from Beirut. The airstrike hit an apartment in northern Lebanon in a predominantly Christian area of the country that has been spared the worst of Israel's attacks in recent weeks.

The Israeli military did not say what or who the target was. Israel's strike comes a day after Hezbollah launched a drone attack on an Israeli military base, killing four soldiers and injuring dozens of others. While visiting the soldiers wounded in the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to retaliate, quote, without compassion in every part of Lebanon, including Beirut. Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance was in Minnesota on Monday, campaigning in his Democratic rival's home turf, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The Ohio senator appeared at a former police station that was set fire in May of 2020 following the killing of George Floyd. Minnesota Public Radio's Clay Masters reports. J.D. Vance used the former Minneapolis 3rd Precinct police station as a backdrop as he talked about the city as one in decline.

The story of Minneapolis is coming to every community across the United States of America if we promote Kamala Harris to president of the United States. Vance said Governor Walz abandoned the police station as rioters set it on fire.

Walls called up the first contingent of soldiers on the day the building was set on fire, but not in time to keep rioters from overrunning the station that night. The city has since found a new location for the third precinct. However, the heavily damaged former one remains unoccupied. For NPR News, I'm Clay Masters in Minneapolis. A 44-year-old North Carolina man has been charged with making threats against FEMA employees working on disaster relief operations in

in the hard-hit western North Carolina area, in the area hit hard by Hurricane Helene. Some FEMA and U.S. Forest Service personnel who had been working on assistance efforts paused their work efforts on behalf of those impacted by the storm. You're listening to NPR News.
