The Ulchi Freedom Shield drills begin Monday morning local time and will run for 11 days. The U.S. says they're defensive in nature. The drills include computer simulations and field exercises.

One of Russia's most active volcanoes erupted on Sunday and spewed plumes of ash some three miles into the sky. The ash briefly triggered a code red warning for aircraft.
