Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Rahm. The war in Gaza is intensifying on the eve of October 7th commemorations, marking one year of war. Gaza health authorities say a new wave of Israeli strikes in Gaza has killed at least 56 people. NPR's Daniel Estrin reports. NPR producer Anas Baba watched funeral processions in central Gaza. Funerals is nonstop.

Families are waving goodbyes, the last farewell for their beloved. The Israeli military called it a precise strike on Hamas militants plotting attacks inside a mosque. Across from the mosque is the hospital morgue. There was no need for any ambulances to carry all of the death. They just carried it away from the one gate to another. Hakima al-Jamal saw her father take his last breath as he was carried out of the mosque. She says, enough world, enough. Tomorrow will be a complete year of war.

Israel's military is deploying more troops near the Gaza border to protect memorial ceremonies marking one year since the Hamas attacks. Daniel Estrin, NPR News. Recovery efforts continue in the southeastern U.S. More than a week after Hurricane Helene struck the region, officials now say that 227 people died. They warn that number could rise as rescue crews search through the rubble.

It's not clear how many people are still missing. Vice President Kamala Harris visited North Carolina yesterday where more than 700 workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are on the ground. She called them her heroes, but also praised the local volunteers. The work that just private citizens are doing, people who are looking out for each other, it's about communities.

bonding and taking care of one another even though they may be perfect strangers to each other. Former President Donald Trump campaigned in Butler, Pennsylvania yesterday at the fairgrounds where a gunman tried to assassinate him in July. Security was heightened with armed official officers and camouflage on rooftops.

It's 30 days to Election Day, and time is running out to register to vote in more than a dozen states. As NPR's Hansi Luang reports, voter registration for this election is ending as soon as today in some parts of the country. If you're eligible but haven't yet registered to vote in Alaska or Rhode Island, you have hours left to sign up for this fall's election.

Monday is the deadline in 10 states, including the swing states of Arizona and Georgia. Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas are among the few states that do not offer online voter registration. Eligible voters there may want to do some extra planning to sign up by Monday, either in person or by mail.

Election officials are urging already registered voters in these states to check their registration status before these deadlines. Voters can sometimes fall off of registration lists or need to update their information because they've moved, changed their name, or haven't voted in a while. More than a million voters have already cast ballots as part of early voting before Election Day. Anzhi Luang, NPR News. This is NPR News.
