Live from NPR News in New York City, I'm Doa Halisa Kautau. It is one year since Hamas extremists attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people. The death toll in Gaza since then, and according to health officials, is estimated to be close to 42,000. Some numbers from health workers suggest the death toll is twice that number.

On a 60 Minutes election special, Bill Whitaker asked Vice President Kamala Harris if the U.S. lacks influence over American ally Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. I think, with all due respect, the better question is do we have an important alliance between the American people and the Israeli people? And the answer to that question is yes. Harris says the work that is done diplomatically with Israel's leadership is ongoing, focused on humanitarian aid and a ceasefire.

Florida is preparing for what is expected to be another major hurricane, Milton, now a Category 1 storm, more than a week after Hurricane Helene hit the state.

Daniel Pryor from Central Florida Public Media reports. Milton is expected to make landfall on the west coast of Florida on Wednesday before it rips across the tourism hub in the Orlando area. Florida Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie says he's preparing his team for not only more power outages than with Hurricane Helene, which led to hundreds of thousands of outages, but also for evacuations. And I have the state emergency response team preparing

for the largest evacuation that we have seen most likely since 2017, Hurricane Irma. The state's resources that have been deployed to North Carolina to help with Hurricane Helene recovery efforts have been sent back home to Florida ahead of Milton. Governor Ron DeSantis has placed 51 counties under a state of emergency ahead of the storm. For NPR News, I'm Danielle Pryor.

A Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, is urging absentee voters in the swing state of Wisconsin to return their ballots soon.

soon. The former president made his fourth stop in eight days in the Badger State on Sunday. Chuck Kornbach of member station WUWM reports. Donald Trump spoke to thousands of people at an airport in Dodge County, Wisconsin. The county went for the Republican by a nearly two-to-one margin in 2020. He urged people to vote early for him, even if they're not comfortable with everything he says or does. There are some people that say we love Trump's

policy, but we don't like Trump. And I say, no, no, because I actually think I'm a nice person. I just, all I want to do is save our country. The campaign of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris held a media call on Sunday with two Republicans who say they no longer back Trump. For NPR News, I'm Chuck Quirmbach in Juneau, Wisconsin.
