Live from NPR News in New York City, I'm Doahleesai Kautel. The Biden administration is sending more active duty troops to North Carolina as the state recovers from the devastation left by Hurricane Helene. NPR's Luke Garrett reports. President Biden is ordering 500 soldiers to move into western North Carolina after Governor Roy Cooper requested the additional support.

In a statement, the White House says the troops will bring, quote, advanced technology to assist with response and recovery efforts. The move comes just days after Biden sent 1,000 active duty troops to the Tar Heel state. Those troops are helping the National Guard deliver food, water and medicine to communities isolated because of Hurricane Helene. The president also said he has been briefed on Milton, a potentially catastrophic storm that could hit the same areas just ravaged by the storm.

Today marks a year since 1,200 Israelis were killed by Hamas terrorists. Since then, nearly 42,000 people have been killed in Gaza.

NPR's Aya Batraoui says there's not going to be a so-called Saudi peace deal with Israel as long as there's a war with Palestinians. No one knows where this is headed. And so countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, for years they tried to cut into Iran's network of proxies from Lebanon to Yemen. But they have made no statements of outrage, of course, you know, over Israel's strikes on Yemen's Houthis or its assassination of Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

NPR's Aya Betrari reporting, the war that began October 7th has expanded to Lebanon where Israeli attacks have killed more than 2,000 people there since mid-September.

Republicans and Democrats are campaigning hard to secure control of the Arizona state legislature. From member station KJZZ in Phoenix, Wayne Schutzke reports it is one of several state legislatures that could flip in November. Republicans hold a slim one-seat majority in both the Arizona House and Senate. But Democrats think they have a chance to flip control of one or both chambers in November to give Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs a friendly legislature to push her policy agenda.

The issues at stake include the future of Arizona's school voucher program, which Hobbs wants to rein in, and efforts to implement new water conservation measures in rural parts of the state.

Arizona is just one of several states with closely watched legislative races this year, including Minnesota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Michigan. For NPR News, I'm Wayne Shutsky in Phoenix. A Russian opposition activist fighting in Ukraine's armed forces has died this weekend on the front lines in Kharkiv. Ildar Dadin was known in Russia as the first anti-Kremlin demonstrator.

to be convicted and jailed for protesting against Vladimir Putin. Dadin was imprisoned for more than two years. His call sign was Gandhi. He joined the Siberian Battalion first, then the Legion of Russia.
